Frequently Asked Questions

What is brainspotting?

Brainspotting (BSP) was discovered in 2003 by David Grand, Ph.D. Over 10,000 therapists have been trained in BSP worldwide. “Where we look affects how we feel.” Brainspotting uses relevant eye positions to help locate, focus, process and release a wide range of emotionally and bodily-based conditions. It taps into the body’s natural self-scanning, self-healing ability and can be integrated into many healing modalities.

What is polyvagal therapy?

Polyvagal informed therapy is based on Polyvagal theory, originated by Dr. Stephen Porges, which provides a physiological and psychological understanding of how and why people move through a continual cycle of mobilization, disconnection, and social engagement. Our Autonomic Nervous System is the foundation upon which our lived experience sits. Therapy through a Polyvagal lens supports clients in re-patterning autonomic patterns when the drive to survive competes with the longing to connect.

What is brain based therapy?

Brain-based psychotherapy aims at changing brain functioning not directly, but through experiences. This is neuro-psychologically informed psychotherapy.

What is talk therapy?

Talk therapy, also known as psychotherapy, is based on the core idea that talking about the things that are bothering you can help with emotional distress. Some talk therapists follow a specific school of thought, such as cognitive theory or behaviorism.

What is Gottman’s work for couples therapy?

The Gottman Method is an approach to couples therapy that includes a thorough assessment of the couple’s relationship and integrates research-based interventions based on the Sound Relationship House Theory. Goals include disarming conflicting verbal communication; increasing intimacy, respect, and affection; removing barriers that create stagnancy; and creating heightened empathy and understanding.

What is vibrational therapy?

Vibration Therapy uses whole-body-vibration to enhance physical health and well-being. Vibrational sound therapy can retune your body, mind and spirit, encouraging relaxation, healing and wellness - including therapeutic singing bowls placed on the body.

What is the vagus nerve?

The vagus nerve is the main nerve of your parasympathetic nervous system, controlling digestion, heart rate and immune functions. It is the longest, most complex of the cranial nerves. When the body sustains trauma the vagus nerve can become hyperactive, affecting heart rate, blood pressure, nausea, vision, and more.

Why would I use self-pay versus insurance?

Many people choose self-pay for privacy. Insurances often authorize strict 45 - 53 minute sessions; trauma and couples work frequently need more time. Self-pay allows scheduling from one to three hours. Insurance companies require a medical diagnosis, which can affect life/health premiums. Most insurances do not cover phone or video sessions. If we don’t take your insurance, we can provide a Superbill for reimbursement.

Are there no-show fees/late cancellations?

Many providers charge a no-show or late cancellation fee if an appointment is missed - often the full cost of a self-pay session. Providers hold a slot specifically for you. Missed appointments create a loss of income because we cannot bill insurance for hours someone did not show. If you have questions about late cancel and no-show fees, please talk to your provider.
